Old ceramic carrelages C136
Old Fliesen C136
A small, elegant antique French ceramic tile with a total surface area of 7.2 m² in a predominantly pink color scheme. It consists of a central tile and matching borders of the same size.
The floor comes from a small entrance hall of a mansion in Epernay, Champagne region.
The tiles were manufactured in the 1920s by the Manufacture de Carrelages Mosaïques Boucquey et Winckelmans , Usine de la Croix Pierre, Lomme, near Lille (northern France). At that time, the company operated as a joint venture, although Winckelmans remains one of the few remaining producers of traditional French tiles.

These are antique ceramic tiles. They are fired and therefore ideal for use in wet areas (e.g., walk-in showers). A patio is also an option, as these tiles are frost-resistant and retain their color.

These antique tiles are over 100 years old and in good condition; some have small holes or chips that can be repaired with grout, but the antique patina of the floor does not detract from the strength of this excellent ceramic. Because they are fired at a high temperature, the tiles can be installed both indoors and outdoors, making them ideal for a patio, summer house (where the floral pattern beautifully connects house and garden), garden path, or conservatory. If chosen for indoor use, they can be combined with underfloor heating, as the tiles are excellent heat conductors and heat retainers.

Note: Antique ceramic tiles were typically made in molds for one or two tiles. Before the advent of computer-automated production methods, molds were made by hand, and the clay colors were mixed visually. That is, by eye. Kiln temperatures and firing times could also vary. As a result, the tiles often exhibit slight variations in size and thickness, and the colors may vary slightly due to the mixing process or firing time. These unique characteristics make handmade antique tiles special and give them their charm. Some floors clearly show these subtle differences, others less so, but when photographing, a random section of the floor is always chosen to represent the entire piece. A tiler is advised to dry-lay a test section to become familiar with the tiles before starting the final installation.

What exactly are monastery tiles?
Ah, monastery tiles with a motif—now that’s something truly special! While plain monastery tiles already exude atmosphere and character, those with a motif add an extra layer of charm. Think classic patterns, floral shapes, geometric lines, or even subtle hand-applied reliefs.
In the past, such tiles were primarily used in monasteries, churches, and old mansions to give a space added status or significance. The motifs sometimes also held symbolic value—for example, flowers representing purity, or cross motifs with religious significance. Over the years, these patterns have evolved, but they still carry that sense of history.
Nowadays, motif-patterned monastery tiles are often used as eye-catching pieces: for example, on a kitchen floor, in a hallway, or even as wall tiles in the bathroom. The beauty is that they fit perfectly in both classic and modern interiors. Combine them with sleek furniture for a stylish contrast between old and new.
They come in ceramic (antique ceramic tiles) or cement (Portuguese cement tiles), each with its own unique look. And thanks to modern techniques, you can even choose from a wide variety of colors and finishes—from softly distressed to sleek and graphic. The possibilities are endless!
