Portuguese tiles is a collective name for all handmade cement tiles, each poured into a mold using a mixture of color pigments and then pressed under high pressure into a full-fledged floor tile 15 or 16 mm thick. Hence the name “cement tile,” as the body of the tile is made of cement. The top layer contains all the patterns and motifs.
They are produced in many countries around the world, but when we talk about new Portuguese cement tiles, we’re talking about tiles produced in Vietnam. This makes perfect sense, since Vietnam was a former French colony, and the first cement tile production took place in France. The French brought this cement tile-making technique to Vietnam.
When we talk about old tiles or antique tiles , we’re talking about French or Belgian tiles. These are usually ceramic. These are also usually smaller in size.
